Alice Durieux, PhD

KPA CTP

As a neuroscientist, I studied the similarities in how brain chemistry influences behavior across humans and animals. My transition to dog training began when I adopted a reactive shelter dog. I had envisioned a harmonious life with my new best friend, but she barked and lunged at my neighbors’ dogs, and showed intense prey drive towards my cats. Rewards-based training led to life-changing improvements in her behavior, inspiring me to help other owners achieve similar success with their challenging dogs.

I pursued formal education in dog training through the prestigious Karen Pryor Academy professional dog trainer program, known for its science-based approach and emphasis on positive reinforcement techniques. I gained hands-on experience by volunteering at a local shelter and apprenticing with an experienced trainer specializing in aggression cases.

At home, I have two rescue dogs and two cats who all participate in training. We spend our free time outdoors—hiking, trail running, mountain biking, and backpacking—where our training is put to practical use every day.

What to expect in our work together

  • Rewards-based training tailored to what motivates your dog

  • Management strategies to prevent rehearsing undesirable behaviors

  • Gradual exposure to help your dog become comfortable with triggers

  • Classical and counter conditioning techniques to help your dog build positive associations with things that currently cause fear

  • Following American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior guidelines, I avoid methods that hurt, scare or intimidate your dog.

Rewards-based training

Together, we'll develop a training plan that respects both your goals and your dog's needs to create lasting behavior change. By strategically using rewards and managing the environment, we encourage behaviors we want while reducing those we don't.

Partnering for lasting results

My goal isn't just to train your dog, but to empower you with the knowledge and confidence to maintain progress, handle challenges independently, and adapt training techniques to new situations long after our work together ends.

  • Clear demonstrations of training techniques

  • Guided practice with supportive feedback

  • Simple homework that fits into your daily routine

  • On-demand virtual check-ins & text support between training sessions

  • Practical troubleshooting strategies for challenges

  • Flexible training plans adapting to changes to your routine
